Projects & Initiatives Lead or Supported by RCL
The following is a selection of the Service Projects and initiatives the Rotary Club of London is leading or supporting. Please take a few moments to read about how Rotary is making positive impacts across the world
You may contact Saumen Ray by email at ‘ray_saumen@rediffmail.com’ for further information on any of the projects detailed below
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the development of computer systems that can perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence. This includes understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, and learning from experience. AI powers tools like voice assistants, recommendation systems, self-driving cars, and smart automation, helping people and organizations solve problems faster and more efficiently.
London Regenerate
Regenerate London inspires and support young people by building strong relationships and creating life changing opportunities; helping them grow in confidence, make the best of their lives and impact the world for good.
Cairo University Children's Hospitals
Cairo University Children’s Hospitals (CUCH) are a leading network of pediatric healthcare facilities in Egypt, affiliated with Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine. They provide comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents, offering specialized services in areas such as pediatrics, pediatric surgery, neonatology, and pediatric oncology. CUCH is committed to combining high-quality clinical care, medical education, and research, training the next generation of pediatric specialists while serving a large and diverse patient population. The hospitals also engage in community outreach and public health programs to improve child health outcomes across Egypt.
Global Scholars
Rotary Global Scholars is a program that supports outstanding individuals to pursue academic studies or research abroad, often in fields related to peace, development, and humanitarian service. The program fosters cross-cultural understanding, leadership, and global networking, enabling scholars to return home with the skills and knowledge to contribute positively to their communities and the world.
Positive Peace
Rotary Positive Peace is Rotary International’s approach to building long-term peace by addressing the underlying conditions that allow societies to thrive, rather than focusing only on preventing conflict.
It is based on the concept of Positive Peace, developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which identifies key societal factors such as strong governance, equitable distribution of resources, free flow of information, acceptance of rights, low corruption, and well-functioning institutions. The idea is that when these conditions are in place, communities are more resilient, more stable, and less likely to experience violence.
Through Rotary’s peace-building efforts—such as Peace Fellowships, community projects, and partnerships—Rotarians apply this framework to support education, economic opportunity, health, and dialogue, helping communities build sustainable peace from the ground up.

Lebanon Peace
Lebanon’s firefighters and Civil Protection teams, the vast majority of whom are volunteers, are the first responders to wildfires, disasters, and emergencies, yet they continue to operate with critical shortages in equipment (such as protective suits, fire extinguishers, helmets, gloves, boots water) and training, after years of economic collapse, conflict, and repeated national crises. The primary beneficiaries of this project are the Lebanese Civil Defense Centers in the following Regions: Akkar El Atiqa, Busaba, Aaramoun, Batroun, Tyre, Mazraat Yachouh, Tripoli, Zgharta, and Ehden.

London Seagrass
The Seagrass Project is a coastal restoration and environmental conservation initiative focused on rebuilding seagrass ecosystems in UK waters, particularly around the Thames Estuary and surrounding coastal areas. Seagrass is a flowering marine plant (such as Zostera species) that grows in shallow intertidal and subtidal environments and plays a vital role in marine ecosystems.
The project is part of a broader partnership effort involving conservation organisations such as the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), alongside support from groups including the Royal Thames Yacht Club and Rotary partners. Its work focuses on restoring habitats such as seagrass beds, oyster reefs, and saltmarshes.
Seagrass restoration delivers multiple environmental benefits: it improves water quality, captures and stores carbon, supports biodiversity, and provides essential nursery habitats for marine life. The initiative is also aligned with broader goals of environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community engagement.
Cervical Cancer
Cervical Cancer is a disease that develops slowly and is often linked to a common virus called HPV. In the early stages, it usually causes no noticeable signs, which is why regular health checks are important.
The good news is that it is largely preventable. Vaccination, routine screening, and early treatment of changes can greatly reduce the risk. When detected early, it is also highly treatable, giving the best chance of a full recovery.
Sand Dams
Sand Dams Worldwide (formerly Excellent Development) is a registered charitable company that supports some of the world’s poorest people to transform their own lives through water and soil conservation in drylands. We do this in three ways:
– By working with local partners, we support rural communities to gain access to clean water close to their homes and to invest in sustainable agriculture
– By pioneering sand dams, we promote and support the application of sand dam technology by key stakeholders in drylands
– By influencing and educating those who can help achieve our vision including – but not limited to – policy makers, international NGOs, government departments and civil engineering firms
Sri Lanka WASH
The Rotary WASH Action Group was formed in 2007 by a group of Rotarians, recognized by Rotary International, and focused on WASH projects. Since then it has facilitated many hundreds of projects – helping clubs find partners, ensuring sustainability, stressing the importance of a needs-driven approach, and developing best practices. We encourage a holistic, integrated approach in which water is not the end in itself, but is rather the means to a better life and livelihood in the community. Most importantly, WASH Rotary Action Group links water and sanitation to improved hygiene, better health, and empowerment of the community – especially women, irrigation and agriculture, education and literacy and, ultimately, child mortality.
Sundarbans
The Sundarbans is arguably one of the world’s most delicate and sensitive ecological treasures. Apart from myriad species of animals and plants, it is home to the seriously endangered Bengal tiger. Anyone who has taken one look at this ultra-magnificent apex predator, cannot but fall in love with its majesty, beauty, grace and power. Indeed, not many realise that this is the largest cat in the world, larger than the much-better known African lion.
Sundarbans is a word derived from Sanskrit and literally means ‘the beautiful forest’, a succinct and accurate description. It is so much more though; it is wild, untamed, unpredictable and treacherous. It is essentially a vast mangrove, formed by the confluence of two of the mightiest rivers in the world, that flow down from the Himalayas, namely, the Ganga (Ganges) and Brahmaputra. This combined river system forms one of the major borders between India and Bangladesh (referred to by the names of Padma and Meghna in the latter country). The delta they form is the largest in the world, emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
